The dry powder extinguishes the fire by a chemical reaction with the flame. When it is applied to hot and smouldering surfaces, the the particles swell to form a barrier to snuff out oxygen, from the source fire, thus preventing re-ignition. Besides being a poor conductor of electricity, the dry powder has the ability to provide the operator a heat shield and has a fast knock out effect.
