Foundry sands are a byproduct of the metal casting industry. New silica sand is used to create casting molds. The sand is reused numerous times to make additional molds, but eventually heat and mechanical abrasion render the sand unsuitable for continued use in casting operations. This spent sand is either landfilled or recycled. Common recycling applications include use in road embankments; structural fills; base, and sub-base for road construction; as a partial replacement for fine aggregate in flowable fill; and as a partial replacement for fine aggregate in asphalt mixtures.
